Using GNU Emacs 20.7.1 I get:
checking where lisp files go... cat: cannot open ./conftest-3835

I know this version of emacs is too old for preview-latex (and I
tested it purely by mistake), but I'd expect a more enlightening error
message.

The reason is "Symbol's function definition is void: dolist"
Perhaps a version-number test?

Sigh. That's what I get for removing the image support test. Ok,
I'll try something. But the priority is getting it to work on
supported platforms right now.
