Please don't include junk like background images. You have been
sorted into my Spambox as a result, leading to a late answer (you are
lucky that it did not take a month longer). Also please report
problems with AUCTeX to the auc-***@sunsite.dk list.
Here is the report of the Spam filter:

Fedora Core 3 for some unfathomable reason includes an incredibly
outdated version of Emacspeak that replaces the working regexp-opt.el
of Emacs-21.3 with an utterly outdated and broken version.
If you actually wanted to use Emacspeak seriously, you certainly don't
want this antique version, so removing it should not cause you
headaches.
Sorry, we just detected this idiocy a few days ago. Our next release
of AUCTeX will likely contain a workaround so that people don't end up
pointing their fingers at us.
Further discussion please to the AUCTeX list where I am copying this.
I removed your Email address from this posting in case that you wrote
to me in private in order not to make your Email address publicly
available, so you won't see further replies to this posting.
But I guess that there is nothing much to add here, anyway. As I
said, we tracked this down and discussed it earlier already.

As far as I can tell, something is wrong with the Fedora rpms for
Auctex as used with Fedora 3. I installed rpm-2 and upon opening a
.tex file, received the message Variable binding depth exceeds max
specpdl-size. I tried making sure that auctex didn?t get loaded at
startup, loading it manually in case there was something wrong with
an init file. Same problem. I uninstalled that version and tried the
-1 version. Same problem. I uninstalled that and installed the rpm
package for 11.53. Worked just fine. I have a very plain vanilla
installation with no .emacs file and the stock default.el ( I
inserted, then removed the (require ?tex-site) line. I don?t quite
see how the rpm install gets auctex to load on startup, but
something is quite odd.
